      三乙醇胺本身是一種水溶性防銹劑。單獨使用它在短期內可有效防止鋼鐵生銹,一般使用濃度為0.5%~2%。三乙醇胺與苯乙醇胺、苯甲酸鈉、硼砂、碳酸鈉等水溶性防銹劑有協同防銹作用,復合使用可顯著提高水基切削液防銹能力。但三乙醇胺對銅有腐蝕作用,添加0.05%~0.1%的苯并三氮唑能改善對銅的防腐性。油酸三乙醇胺也是一種防銹劑,它適用于黑色金屬、鋁合金的防銹。

      表面活性劑在水基切削液中起滲透、擴散、穩定、清洗作用,是合成切削液與乳狀液必不可少的添加劑。三乙醇胺與脂肪酸可合成一種陰離子表面活性劑。不同配比、不同脂肪酸合成的表面活性劑其HLB值不同,可適合于不同水基切削液的需要。這些表面活性劑均有良好的乳化能力,若與非離子表面活性劑烷基酚聚氧乙烯醚或脂肪醇聚氧乙烯醚配合使用,乳化效果更佳。
